- A new visual album coming exclusively to Disney Plus on July 31

Disney is tapping the talents and popularity of Beyonce as it continues spotlighting items for its new Disney Plus channel. This week they released a new trailer for her forthcoming film “Black Is King.” It can be viewed online on the Shadow and Act website, one of the country’s premier places for stories about Black entertainment. It’s based on the music from “The Lion King: The Gift,” and also stars many of the LPs top artists, plus some guest appearances.

The film was produced over a one-year period, and according to a statement from Disney productions, is designed to highlight and recognize the unity and value of Black families. The main story focuses on a young king’s transcendent journey through betrayal, love and self-identity. His ancestors help guide him toward his destiny, and with his father’s teachings and guidance from his childhood love, he earns the virtues needed to reclaim his home and throne.

The film is based on the music of “The Lion King: The Gift,” released last year in conjunction with the Disney pic, and stars the album’s featured artists and some special guest appearances. The Beyoncé-produced album features Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell, 070 Shake, Tierra Whack, Jay-Z, Blue Ivy Carter and Jessie Reyez, as well as African artists including Wizkid, Shatta Wale, Burna Boy, Mr Eazi, Tiwa Savage, Tekno, Yemi Alade, Busiswa and Salatiel. In an Instagram post from last month, Beyonce described the project as “a labor of love.” “It is my passion project that I have been filming, researching, and editing day and night for the past year. I’ve given it my all and now it’s yours. It was originally filmed as a companion piece to The Lion King: The Gift soundtrack and meant to celebrate the breadth and beauty of Black ancestry. I could never have imagined that a year later, all the hard work that went into this production would serve a greater purpose.”

Bey previously released a companion album for the film called The Lion King: The Gift, and later shared a documentary called Beyoncé Presents: Making the Gift, which focused on her development and curation process for the project. Recently, the artist released a Juneteenth-specific track entitled “Black Parade.” She’s also recently partnered with the NAACP to support small black-owned businesses.
